These arctic wolf pups were photographed in Eureka, NU.  In such a harsh environment it was always amazing to see the animals that survived up there.  One summer we were fortunate enough to have the wolf pack hang around the weather station with their pups.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; mso-pagination: none;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; language: en-CA; mso-ansi-language: en-CA;" lang="en-CA">At first the wolf pups were very shy but slowly they ventured out of their hiding.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>There were four pups in total and already a noticeable hierarchy among them.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>The babysitter, one of the younger female wolves of the pack, laid up on higher ground and lifted her head every once in a while to take in the surroundings.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>My presence did not seem to bother her nor my close proximity to the pups.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Eventually the pups came out, completely uninhibited by me and the camera, and played all about the tundra.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>I followed them, sat and watched them and at some point put the camera away and was just there in the moment absorbing everything around me.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">This photo was taken at Eureka, NU, an Environment Canada weather station located on Ellesmere Island and approximately 1000 miles from the North Pole.  Previously, I worked for the Canadian Detection of Atmospheric Change (CANDAC) group operating instruments measuring various aspects of the atmosphere.  About 14 km away from the main weather station complex and 600 metres up there is a lab that houses several of the instruments.  This photo was taken just out the doors of the lab and is looking NNW.  The land at the horizon on the left side of the photo is actually Axel Heiberg Island.</p>
