Arctic Wolf Pups

These arctic wolf pups were photographed in Eureka, NU.  In such a harsh environment it was always amazing to see the animals that survived up there.  One summer we were fortunate enough to have the wolf pack hang around the weather station with their pups.

One evening I ventured out in hope of getting some pictures of the pups who were hanging out in their small underground den (not the main den) with no guarantee of them making an appearance.

At first the wolf pups were very shy but slowly they ventured out of their hiding.  There were four pups in total and already a noticeable hierarchy among them.  The babysitter, one of the younger female wolves of the pack, laid up on higher ground and lifted her head every once in a while to take in the surroundings.  My presence did not seem to bother her nor my close proximity to the pups.  Eventually the pups came out, completely uninhibited by me and the camera, and played all about the tundra.  I followed them, sat and watched them and at some point put the camera away and was just there in the moment absorbing everything around me.

Currently on display at Earth Bound Bakery and Delicatessens
